Description
The Vicarage at Ripon College, originally known as The Old Vicarage, is a building constructed between 1853 and 1854, with later enlargements in 1859 and 1860. Designed by the architect G.E. Street, it is built from squared coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a plain-tile roof with octagonal-shafted stone stacks. The building has a complex plan based on two parallel ranges and is designed in the Gothic style, standing two storeys tall.
The entrance front includes a timber lean-to porch over a central arched doorway, with a gabled 2-light mullioned window above. To the right, there are two 2-light windows with dividing stone colonettes, and on the first floor, a 3-light mullion and transom window is situated below a large gable. The left gable wall features an off-centre triplet of arched windows, consisting of lancets flanking a 3-light traceried window that is topped with a gablet and cross. Service ranges are located to the right of the main entrance.
At the rear, there is a central projecting gable with a 4-light mullion and transom window beneath a canted recessed bay window. The interior is reported to have a Gothic fireplace and a wooden screen pierced with quatrefoils, although it has not been inspected. This building formerly served as the residence of the Principal of Cuddesdon Theological College, who also held the position of Vicar of Cuddesdon.
