Description

The Orchard and Orchard Cottage are a house and cottage located on High Street in Cuddesdon, dating from the late 17th century, with the cottage built in the 18th century. The house is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with timber lintels and features a thatched roof with brick stacks. It has a three-unit lobby-entry plan that is positioned at right angles to the road and consists of one storey plus attics. The entrance front is mostly hidden by a 20th-century weatherboarded lean-to, but it retains a wooden casement window with an ovolo moulding on the far left. The left gable wall has a three-light ovolo-moulded casement. Many of the windows have been renewed and altered, and the roof is half-hipped to the right. Inside, there are two staircases, one of which is a winder located between the lobby and the central stack. The interior features chamfered and stopped beams, a bolection-mould fireplace in the bedroom, and a lead pump.

The cottage is built of coursed rubble and brick, topped with an old plain-tile roof. It is a single-unit structure with a rear outshut and has two storeys. The front has two windows that align with the gable of the house, featuring a plank door and a two-light casement window to the right, all under flat stone arches. These arches have a narrow roll-mould and extend as a band across the front. The first floor is constructed in Flemish-bond brickwork with flared headers and a dentil eaves-course, and it includes two small-pane casements with segmental arched heads. The interior of the cottage has not been inspected.
