Description
The war memorial cross in the forecourt of Ripon College was built around 1920 and is made of limestone. It features a square stone plinth with a Latin inscription on three sides, raised on two steps. The base has broach-stops and supports a narrow octagonal shaft. At the top, there is an elaborate stone head with a crocketted spirelet, which includes four canopied niches that display carved scenes: the east side depicts the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and St John; the south side shows St Michael battling a dragon; the west side features the Virgin and child; and the north side illustrates St George and the dragon. Each scene is supported by angels holding shields. This memorial commemorates the alumni of Cuddesdon Theological College who were killed during the First World War.
