Description

Austins Greyhound Inn is a coaching inn that has been converted into a shop and dwellings. It likely dates from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of grey brick with red brick dressings, and its roof and chimney stacks are not visible. It is three stories high and has a five-window range.

The ground floor features a 20th-century plate-glass shop front with plate-glass doors located to the left of the center. There is a carriageway to the right. A 20th-century fascia board runs between the ground and first floors. The first floor has an early 20th-century angled bay window in the center, which includes wood mullion and transom windows. On the left and right of the first floor, there are unhorned Venetian sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick heads. A flat brick band separates the first and second floors. The second floor has a 12-pane sash window with a brick flat head in the center, flanked by tripartite horned sashes with glazing bars and brick flat heads. At the top, there is a flat brick band at the base of a plain parapet.

Inside, the ground floor is occupied by a 20th-century shop. Historically, John Hampden died at the Greyhound Inn, which adds to the building's significance. It is included for its group value.
