Description

The Lodge, gate piers, and flanking walls form the entrance to Carmel College, constructed in 1889 and likely designed by R.S. Wornum. The building is red brick in Flemish bond, with rubbed brick and Portland stone dressings, and has a clay tile hipped roof with a modillion eaves cornice. A brick stack rises from the roof apex, embellished with small brick corner pilasters.

The lodge is square in plan, facing the drive, with a porch on the left side of the north front and a short single-storey wing to the rear left. A gateway is attached to the porch. The design is Queen Anne in style.

The north front features a canted bay window to the right and a large porch to the left, with stone balustrades supporting squat Tuscan columns and a canopy with a pedimental gable. The gable features a strapwork cartouche inscribed 'A.C.F. - AD 1889'. A panelled door is fitted with a round-arched light above. Large dormers with semi-circular pediments and shell motifs are set within the roof on the north, east, and west sides, the north dormer having a replaced sash window. The windows are casements with glazing bars, set within rubbed brick arches, and have quoins. The west side has a half-hipped roof.

The rear, south, side has a short single-storey wing to the right, with a doorway in the gable end.

The gateway adjoins the north east corner, featuring a pair of Portland stone gate piers with panelled sides, carved drops, moulded caps, and ball finials. Similar outer piers support low linking walls; the south wall is integral with the porch.

The interior of the lodge has not been inspected.
