Description
The amphitheatre at the former Carmel College was built in 1965 by Thomas Hancock, with John Toovey as the assistant designer. It is constructed from concrete slabs set on blue/grey engineering bricks and features a fan-shaped design, including a central circular raised dais and projecting steps. This amphitheatre is part of a group with the adjacent synagogue, which was also designed by Hancock and completed in 1963. The sunken, curved shape of the amphitheatre complements the convex end and the high, soaring structure of the synagogue.
