Description
The building is a barn and attached stable located approximately 60 meters to the south-west of Hunt's Farm Cottage. The barn likely dates from the 17th century, with repairs and cladding added in the 18th century, while the stable was built in the late 19th century. The barn is timber-framed and originally featured wattle and daub infill, but it is now clad in weatherboard, with a brick and flint plinth and plain tile roofs. It consists of three bays and has central opposed cart entries with strap-hinged board doors, as well as a pedestrian side door at the rear. The stable includes three small-pane windows and two ridge louvres, with a stable door at the rear flanked by two-light small-pane windows.
Inside the barn, the wall posts are jowelled at the cart entry but unjowelled elsewhere, featuring straight braces to the wall plate and tie-beams. It has collared queen-post roof trusses, clasped purlins, old rafters, and a square-section ridge piece supported by apex collars and wind braces. The wall framing includes a mid rail and closely set studs, which appear to replace the former wattle and daub infill, as indicated by holes in the soffits of plates and rails and grooves in the top of the rails and sole plate that would have held the staves for the wattle and daub panels. The barn also has a timber threshing floor. A barn is shown at this location on J Blagrave's 1586 map of the Manor of Harding. The stable is included for its group value.
