Description

The building is a barn and attached stable located approximately 10 meters southeast of Hunt's Farm Cottage. The barn dates from the 17th century or earlier and has been repaired and clad in the 18th century, while the attached shelter shed was added in the late 19th century. The barn is timber framed on a brick plinth, originally featuring wattle and daub infill, but later clad in weatherboard with a corrugated iron roof. It consists of five bays with central opposing cart entries, although the doors have been removed from the west elevation, and it has a hipped roof.

The shelter shed, which projects from the right bay of the barn, is also timber framed with weatherboard cladding and has a plain tile roof. Its gable front features a 20th-century stable door, and the left side was originally open, supported by wooden posts on chamfered padstones that are arch-braced to the wall plate. This side now has 20th-century horizontal board infill and stable doors.

Inside the barn, the wall posts have swollen jowls, with straight braces connecting to the wall plates and tie beams; some braces have been removed and replaced with iron-bolted versions. The roof trusses include curved braces below the principal rafters that support collars, with two tiers of clasped purlins and split log rafters. The square-section ridge piece is supported by apex collars. The wall framing features a mid rail, and close-set studs appear to have replaced the former wattle and daub infill, as evidenced by holes in the soffits of plates and rails and grooves in the top of the rails and sole plate that would have held the staves for the wattle and daub panels. A barn is depicted at this site on J Blagrave's 1586 map of the Manor of Harding.
