Description

Chinnor War Memorial is a First World War memorial located within a raised paved enclosure on the High Street. The enclosure is defined by low brick piers topped with stone, low brick walls, and iron railings; it is accessed by three steps leading to a brick-walled entrance with decorative iron gates. The memorial itself is a limestone wheel-head cross mounted on a hexagonal shaft, which sits upon a hexagonal plinth and a four-stepped hexagonal base. The plinth is inscribed on one face with the words ‘IN MEMORY OF/ THESE/ OFFICERS AND MEN/ OF CHINNOR PARISH/ WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918,’ and lists names on the remaining faces. A raised plaque set into the two middle steps commemorates the Second World War, inscribed with the dates 1939 – 1945 and additional names.
