Description
Pettiwell House is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the 16th or 17th century. It is timber-framed with brick and plaster infill, along with some rubble stone walls, and features an old plain tile roof with brick ridge stacks. The building has a two-unit lobby-entry plan that was extended on the left side towards the road, likely in the 17th century. It consists of one storey plus attics.
The original entrance is flanked by casements with rectangular framing above. The extension is fully framed on a stone plinth and consists of bays, with a central one-bay projection that is partly clad in stone and features brick quoins and dressings from the 18th century. The present and former entrances are located on either side of the wing, and the gable front has a three-light casement on each floor, both under a segmental brick arch. There are also two gabled dormers at the rear.
Inside, the house has open fireplaces and a late 17th-century stair with turned balusters. It was formerly owned by St. John's College, Oxford.
