Description

Lanesra Cottage is a house dating from the late medieval period, with significant alterations and additions in the 16th/17th centuries and 1812. It is constructed of rubble with brick dressings and timber-framing with brick infill, and has a thatched roof with brick ridge stacks. The house originally comprised three units, with a gable outshut to the left and a two-unit range to the rear on the left. It is one storey high with attics. The front has three irregular casement windows, some with brick segmental arches, and a door alongside 20th-century casements, with a further small casement in the gable outshut. Dormers are located to the left and centre, the left one being gabled with a tiled roof. The right-hand gable has a half-hip, and the left-hand gable is weather-boarded. The rear wall is timber-framed on a stone plinth; the right gable is also timber-framed. A rear extension, built of rubble with a datestone reading S/EE 1812 (likely in stucco), was added in 1812, along with a brick end unit also probably dating to 1812. This extension has an old plain-tile roof and a further stack. Internally, the house has been altered, but retains much of the original timber-framing, including one exposed blade of a large cruck located at the rear, left of centre. This is one of two cruck structures known in the village.
