Description
The dovecote, located approximately 75 meters west of Culham Manor, dates from 1685 and was built for Sir Cecil Bisshopp (or Bishop). It features a coursed stone rubble plinth with brick coping, along with coursed stone rubble walls that have brick dressings. The roof is covered with old plain tiles. The structure has a rectangular two-cell plan and is two stories high with two bays. A central plank door is framed by a brick surround and topped with a brick hood mould. There is a brick string course below the eaves, and two openings are present in the central cross-gable, as well as in the opposing cross-gable at the rear. Each end has a segmental-arched opening. Inside, there is a complex timber-framed roof structure, and the two cells are lined with 3,329 brick nesting boxes. This dovecote is reputed to be the second largest in England.
