Description
Culham House is a rectory that has been converted into a house. It was built in the mid-18th century, likely designed by John Phillips, and has been extended with alterations in the late 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century. The building features red brick with flared headers in Flemish bond at the plinth, and grey brick with red brick dressings on the five bays to the center and left, while the right two bays are red brick with flared headers in Flemish bond. The roof is an old plain-tile hipped design.
The house is three stories high and has a seven-window range. The entrance includes a six-panel door with a painted wood Gibbs surround topped by a triangular pediment. The ground and first floors have 12-pane unhorned sash windows, while the second floor has 6-pane unhorned sash windows. There are angled bays on the left and right returns. The rear of the building also has a three-story, seven-window range, constructed of red brick with flared headers in Flemish bond, featuring a sash door in the center with a flat hood, 12-pane unhorned sashes on the ground and first floors, and 6-pane unhorned sash windows on the second floor, with a flat brick band between the first and second floors.
Inside, there is a dog-leg staircase located at the rear left that leads from the ground to the second floor, complete with a baluster balustrade. Some ground floor rooms have painted wood doorcases, and most fireplaces have been replaced in the 20th century but are styled to resemble those from the 18th century. John Phillips, who lived from 1709 to 1775, was the lay rector of Culham and a master builder in London.
