Description
Western House is a substantial house dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the early 17th century. It features pebbledashed and rendered timber framing set on a flint and brick plinth, topped with an old plain-tile roof and pebbledashed stacks. The building has a three-unit plan and has been extended, standing two storeys plus attics.
The front façade, which has three windows, is also pebbledashed and includes projecting gabled outer bays. The left bay has a weatherboarded gable, and both outer bays feature a small 19th-century plank door near their outer angles, next to a window. Most windows are casements, except for a wide six-pane sash in the right bay. A stack with three shafts rises to the right of centre, while a large early 17th-century chimney, which has multiple shafts, projects from the left gable wall and is partly contained within an extension that is now No. 56. The right end wall and rear of the house have small irregular windows, with a rear gable to the left and two small brick extensions.
Inside, there is a massive internal stack that includes two Tudor-arched moulded-stone fireplaces and a first-floor fireplace with a brick Tudor arch. There is also an early 17th-century rectangular stone fireplace with ovolo mouldings, 17th-century oak panelling with fluted pilasters, and a flight of solid-tread oak stairs from the 16th century leading to the attics. The oak roof structure features butt and clasped purlins, and there is evidence of herringbone brick infill on the right gable.
