Description

Pyke Barn Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with possible earlier origins. It features a cruck frame and small timber framing with wattle and daub infill, topped by a gabled and half-hipped thatched roof. There is a brick stack on the left end. The cottage has a two-unit plan, is one storey high with an attic, and has a two-window range. A 20th-century porch is located to the right, and there are late 19th-century two-light casements. Inside, there is a chamfered and stopped beam on the left and winder stairs. The roof has two bays with an obscured cruck truss. According to deeds held by the owner, the house was built in 1631 for Ezra White. The low cost of construction (6 shillings and 4 pence) and the cruck framing suggest that it may have been a substantial rebuilding rather than a completely new house.
