Description

This dovecote, built in 1714 as indicated on the rear of the door lintel, is located approximately 75 metres southeast of the Manor House in Garsington. Constructed from limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, it features an old plain-tile roof and has a square plan. The walls are set on a plinth and are quartered with flush ashlar quoining and banding. There is an old plank door on the west side, topped by a one-piece stone segmental-arched head, and two-light stone-mullioned openings at high level on the north and south sides. The initials "I W" are inscribed on a quoin in the south wall. The dovecote has a pyramid roof with a square wooden pyramid-roofed glover.

Inside, the roof consists of one row of purlins, with ashlar pieces supporting the rafters and a suspended octagonal ring-beam bracketed from the principals. Intersecting beams at half-height feature a central hole for a potence-shaft. The walls are lined with stone nesting boxes. This structure was built for a member of the Wickham family.
