Description
This building, known as Nos. 2 to 6 High Street and Monarchs Court, 2 Mill Lane, is a row of houses dating from the 17th century, with a likely late 17th century front on the left return and an early 18th century front. The structure is made of grey brick with red brick dressings and features an old plain-tile hipped roof with brick ridge stacks. It is two stories high and has a nine-window range. The entrances are six-panel doors with overlights and flat hoods positioned to the left and right of the center. All openings have 12-pane segmental topped sashes. There is a flat brick band between the ground and first floor, and a parapet at the eaves.
On the left return, the building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings and is also two stories tall with a five-window range. It has a sash door with a flat hood to the left and 16-pane sashes on the ground floor. A chamfered brick band separates the ground and first floors, with five cross-windows on the first floor and a chamfered brick band at the eaves. The building features chamfered rusticated quoins on both the left and right sides. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to be of interest. This site is reputed to be where Charles I held his court at Benson during his flight to Oxford in the Civil War.
