Description
Varley's is a house that has been converted into a supermarket and dwelling. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century and was refronted in the 18th century. Originally, it was timber-framed and is now finished in colourwashed brick with a gabled old tile roof and a brick ridge stack. The building has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys tall with a four-window range. The front features 20th-century double doors and flanking shop windows, along with a plank door leading to a left passage. There are timber lintels above the first-floor horizontal sliding sashes and dentilled eaves. Inside, you can find chamfered beams and large joists on the left. The roof has jowled posts supporting a four-bay queen-post structure with clasped purlins and curved windbraces, along with a remodelled truss on the right.
