Description
Nos 1 to 7 Church Avenue are a row of buildings dated 1846, although plaques indicate endowments from 1664 and 1669. Originally built as 14 almshouses, they have been reduced to 7, featuring paired doors, with one door now blank. The buildings are constructed of red and grey brick with a tiled roof and stand at one storey high. They showcase Tudor-style doors and two-light windows, complete with early 19th-century casements and dripstone moulds. Red brick pilasters are positioned between the windows and doors. The surface of the lane is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 7 Church Avenue, Chantry House, Chantry Cottage, No 20 Thameside, Nos 8 to 20, the Brewery Buildings at No 86A New Street, and St Mary's Parish Church on Hart Street.
