Description
Waterstock House stable court is a stable complex dating from the late 18th century, with an early 18th-century barn. It is constructed from coursed squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, and features timber framing in the barn, topped with old plain-tile roofs. The layout is arranged around a courtyard.
The rear and left ranges are one storey plus a loft, while the front ranges are single storey. The rear range includes three stable doors with rectangular overlights, flanked by pairs of 16-pane sash windows, all featuring stone flat arches. There is a mounting block to the left of center. The left range is irregular and has a central segmental-arched carriage entrance. The right range contains a partly weatherboarded three-bay barn; the wall facing the courtyard is stone, while the rear wall and one end wall are timber-framed and partly infilled with brick.
The single-storey, hip-roofed front ranges are positioned beside ashlar gate piers, with the left range incorporating a timber-framed section in its outer wall. Inside, the barn features a clasped-purlin roof with short curved under-principals. This stable court was likely built around the same time as Waterstock House, which was constructed between 1787 and 1791 by S.P. Cockerell for Sir Henry Ashhurst, and the house was mostly demolished in 1953.
