Description

The George Gallery is an inn that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. It dates from the mid to late 16th century and was refronted in the early 18th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features an old plain-tile roof with brick stacks. It has a three-unit plan with a through entry and stands two storeys high.

The front has five windows and is accented with ashlar quoins. There is a carriage entry to the right of the centre, which has a semi-circular arch, keyblock, and imposts, with a window above it. The flanking bays contain single windows on both the ground and first floors, while the extreme left bay has pairs of windows. All windows are topped with heavy stone segmental arches and feature 20th-century sashes. Additional windows have been inserted in the right bay, and entrances are located within the carriage entry.

At the rear, there is a restored timber-framed gallery. Inside, there are two stone fireplaces with 4-centre arches and recessed spandrels, a large open inglenook fireplace with a massive stone segmental arch, and a wall painting on the first floor that is dated to around 1570. The building also features butt-purlin roofs.
