Description

No. 53 on Oxford Road is a cottage dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It is constructed of rubble limestone with squared quoins and timber lintels, topped by an old plain-tile roof featuring a brick ridge stack. The building has a two-unit plan and consists of one storey plus attics. The front has two three-light casement windows, a plank door on the extreme right, and a central two-light stair window aligned with the stack. There is a small dormer on the right side. The straight joints on the left side suggest it may have an earlier construction date. To the right, there is a 19th-century stone and brick lean-to extension, and both gables have been partly rebuilt in brick. Inside, there is a central fireplace with a stair adjacent to the stack.
