Description

Hill Farmhouse is an early 17th-century and mid-18th-century farmhouse, now a house. It is constructed of limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and timber framing with brick infill, and has a plain-tile roof with brick stacks. The layout is L-shaped, with one storey and attics. The main three-unit range has ashlar quoins, a flush storey band and a stone eaves cove, featuring casement windows. These windows have 3, 2 and 3 lights, set beneath segmental stone arches. A 19th-century tiled hood on wooden brackets shelters the door, which is located to the left of the centre. Two 3-light gabled dormers are present in the roof, one in the centre and one to the left. Stacks are located on the right gable, the ridge, and a massive ridge stack is on the rear wing to the left. The gable of the wing, which rises above lintel-height, is timber-framed with brick infill. This part of the wing, now a single unit, likely formed part of an earlier house. The interior features a through-passage, continuing to a door in the rear gable wall, and a staircase with 18th-century turned balusters. The property was formerly a farm belonging to Queens College, Oxford.
