Description
Nos. 17, 18, and 19 High Street is a row of three houses, which may have originally been shops with living spaces above. They likely date from the early 16th century, with later alterations. The buildings are roughcast, probably over timber framing, and feature an old plain-tile roof with a brick end stack on the left. There is a basement, and the structure is two stories high with a three-window range.
To the right of the center, there is a 20th-century six-panel door. To the left of the center, there are two six-panel doors with architrave surrounds, accessed by stone steps. The center has a basement window, while to the left is a 4-pane unhorned sash window with an architrave surround. To the right, there is a 20th-century twelve-pane horned sash window, also with an architrave surround.
The shop window, likely from the late 18th century, has 24 panes and is flanked by half-columns with masks on the lintel at the center. The first floor features a jetty, with the center jetty at a higher level. There are 12-pane unhorned sashes with architrave surrounds to the left and center, and a 12-pane horned sash with an architrave surround to the right.
Inside, the cellar of No. 18 has stone quadripartite vaulting of two bays, possibly using re-used masonry from the priory church. The ground floor of No. 19 has been lowered, and there is an arch-braced truss on the first floor front. Nos. 17 and 18 have a king-post smoke bay, and No. 17 shows evidence of a former cross-gable facing the street.
