Description

Numbers 1 and 2, also known as Cobblers, is a house that was formerly divided into two separate units. It is dated 1659 on an internal beam. The building features a rendered plinth, large timber-framing, rendered infill, and an old plain-tile roof with a brick ridge stack at the center. It likely had a former two-unit lobby-entry plan. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range positioned at right angles to the street.

There is a plank door on the left return, and a central curved staircase bay on both the ground and first floors. The ground floor has a two-light wood casement window to the left and a single-pane window to the right. On the first floor, there are two two-light wood casement windows on the left and right, and a two-light wood mullion window in the center. The left return features a nine-light wood mullion window with ovolo moulded mullions and diagonally set shafts on the ground floor to the right. The first floor jetties out to the right, supported by shaped and carved brackets and a richly carved bressumer.

The right return has a double queen-post truss on the left gable end and a queen-post truss on the right gable end. Inside, there is a spiral staircase, ovolo spine beams with decorative end stops on the ground and first floors to the left, open fireplaces (some of which are blocked), and extensive beaming throughout the interior.
