Description
Upper Chalford Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the early 17th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building features large timber framing with arched braces and brick infill, rendered in the center and on the right side. It has an old plain-tile roof and a brick shaped ridge stack with a 19th-century top located to the left of center, along with a 19th-century end stack on the right. The layout is probably based on a three-unit lobby entry plan.
The farmhouse is two stories high and has a four-window range. To the left of center, there is an 18th-century six-panel door, which is accompanied by a 20th-century open porch. To the right of center, there is a 19th-century four-panel part-glazed door with a 19th-century open, flat-roofed porch. A two-light wood casement window is found to the left, while 19th-century angled bays with horned sashes and flat lead roofs are located in the center and on the right. The first floor features four-pane horned sash windows.
At the rear, there is an outshut on the right with a catslide roof and a gabled staircase projection to the left of center. The left end of the farmhouse has 18th-century leaded casement windows on the ground floor with Gothick caming.
Inside, there is a winder staircase to the right of center and a straight flight staircase with winders to the left. Blocked fireplaces are present on both the ground and first floors to the left of center, with a bread oven located at the rear of the ground floor. The ground floor also features chamfered spine beams, while extensive beaming is visible on the first floor. The roof structure is of queen-post construction.
