Description

The granary at Bishop’s Court Farm dates from the mid-19th century. It is a timber-framed building raised on limestone staddle stones, with timber weatherboarding and a slate roof. A brick supporting plinth has been added between the third and fourth staddles on the north side, and between the fourth and fifth on the south.

The granary is rectangular and oriented roughly east/west, situated northwest of the farm's complex of sheds and barns, originally arranged around a loose courtyard. It stands on three rows of five staddle stones. The exterior is clad in horizontal weatherboarding with a pitched roof. Irregular openings in the cladding are now covered with modern sheeting. The south elevation has a doorway with a segmental-arched head and a ledge and plank door.

Inside, the granary has two floors. The lower floor is a single open space, while the upper floor, accessed through an open hatch, is divided into two rooms by a timber stud wall. The timber frame is exposed internally, consisting of three principal bays. The lower floor features posts with moulded heads supporting deep ceiling beams with chamfered edges and run-out stops. The walls have substantial studs and braces. The upper floor has upright posts carrying the wall plate, with cruck blades rising from the floor plate to meet the collar beam, secured with a tie to the wall plate part-way up. At each gable end is a simple collar and tie arrangement. A single, wide purlin supports the rafters, which meet at a narrow ridge piece. A boarded partition on the upper floor has a ledge and plank door with slender strap hinges.
