Description

The Doctor's House is a house and outbuilding located on Dorchester High Street, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with extensions and remodels from the late 18th century and mid to late 19th century. The outbuilding is from the early 18th century. The structure features timber framing with colourwashed brick infill, some weatherboarding, and brick, topped with an old plain-tile roof and brick stacks. It is arranged in an L-plan and consists of one storey plus attics.

The front, which has three windows from the 19th century, features applied timbering on the left and centre bays. A central four-panel door is topped with a canopy supported by shaped brackets. To the left of the door are casement windows with one and two lights, and to the right is a 20th-century canted bay window. The first floor has three gabled dormers, while the roof is adorned with ornamental ridge tiles and apex finials, with stacks positioned to the left of centre and to the right. The left gable wall includes a 19th-century canted bay window.

The earlier rear wing has a three-unit plan with a continuous outshut and is timber framed with some herringbone brick infill, partially hidden by a small 18th-century wing at the junction with the front range. To the right of the front is a three-bay timber-framed outbuilding range, likely originally a barn. The front wall of this outbuilding is now brick with an entry on the right, while the rear remains weatherboarded.

Inside, the front range features some chamfered beams and likely incorporates work from the 17th and 18th centuries. The outbuilding range has a clasped-purlin roof with queen-strut trusses.
