Description
The grandstand for the Henley Royal Regatta is located on the east bank of the River Thames at the finishing line. It was designed by Frederick G. Sainsbury in 1911 and constructed in 1913. The building underwent refurbishment and alterations in the 1990s and early 21st century.
The west elevation, which faces landward, has been significantly altered in the late 20th century and early 21st century, including a rear extension and modifications to the post-war single-storey kitchen and facilities wing. A new balcony was added to this elevation in the early 21st century, making the west elevation much renewed and not part of the building's special interest.
The grandstand features a cast-iron structure on a concrete base, with modern steel reinforcement and materials, including glazing, used during the refurbishment. It has a linear plan designed to resemble a boat, raised above the retaining wall to the east river bank, providing a first-floor deck for viewing the races.
The exterior consists of six bays, with the lower deck featuring recessed glazed panels that were renewed in the early 21st century, along with entrances on the east (river) elevation. Above this is a projecting upper deck, enclosed in the early 21st century, with a lattice iron balcony on the south, east, and north sides. The original structure is visible on the east elevation, showcasing cast-iron columns that support steel beams, which extend past the columns to hold the timber joists of the balconies, with curved braces connecting the columns and beams.
The roof is a glassfibre structure from the early 21st century, designed to mimic the appearance of the original canvas roof. The interior has not been inspected, but it is believed that the fixtures, fittings, and finishes are modern replacements.
