Description

No 40 on Cornmarket Street is a house and shop that dates back to the 17th century but was refronted in the 18th century. It is a four-storey building with a timber frame that has been covered in stucco. The ground floor features a shop front, while the first and second floors have a projecting three-sided bay with 19th-century sash windows. The third floor includes an 18th or 19th-century sash window set in a moulded wood frame. At one time, one of the original 17th-century gables was visible at the back of the building. The roof is not visible. This property is part of a group that includes Nos 38 to 42.
