Description
Rewley Abbey, wall and gateway, is located on the north side of Rewley Road, facing the south-west side of the Oxford Canal. This site was originally a Cistercian foundation established in 1281. Most of the buildings have been destroyed, leaving only a short length of wall that features a 15th-century stone doorway. The doorway has a two-centred arch set within a square head, adorned with spandrels that contain quatrefoils. Above the arch, there is a label with stops, and the jambs of the doorway are moulded. For its condition in 1820, there are two drawings by J C Buckler in the Bodleian Library, MS. Don. a. 3. II, 120 and 121.
