Description
The boundary wall at the north-west corner of the former Dominican friary site, known as Blackfriars, is located on the south side of Blackfriars and the east side of Ladybellegate Street in Gloucester. This wall was constructed between 1540 and 1545 for Sir Thomas Bell and has undergone repairs at various times. It features reused medieval worked stones and rubble that are partly laid in courses, along with brick repairs and stone weathered copings.
Near the corner facing Blackfriars, there is a gateway with a pointed arch, which has an outer continuous hollow moulding on the splayed jambs and arch, topped with a coped parapet. Approximately 6 meters to the east, there is a second arched gateway made of brick, with a stone inset above the arch that is inscribed with "Blackfriars Square." This wall is now part of the ancient monument that includes Blackfriars Church.
