Description
Navigation House is a building located on Commercial Road in Gloucester, constructed in 1848 for a ships' chandler. It has been altered in the 20th century and is currently used as offices. The structure is made of brick with the front faced in ashlar and features a hipped slate roof with a brick stack.
The building is two storeys high, with a two-storey basement at the rear. The front is symmetrical, with a doorway at each end framed by pilasters that have banded rustication and moulded imposts. These support an entablature at the first-floor level, which is adorned with a cornice held up by consoles above the outer pilasters. The former opening between the doorways was modified in 1985 to include a matching central pilaster and a sash window with glazing bars (3x4 panes) on either side. Each doorway has a rectangular fanlight with margin-pane glazing and panelled doors.
On the first floor, there are raised and chamfered quoins at the outer corners and a crowning entablature. Two sash windows with glazing bars (3x4 panes) are set in openings that have projecting sills. Additionally, there is a tall, semicircular arched sash window with glazing bars in the center of the east wall, which lights the stairwell. The interior has not been inspected.
