Description
No. 15 Ladybellegate Street is a house that is part of an early 19th-century terrace, which incorporates remnants of the 13th-century west range of the former Dominican friary known as Blackfriars. The building was altered around 1540 for Sir Thomas Bell and underwent further changes in the late 19th century. It was remodeled and restored in the late 20th century by English Heritage. The structure is built of brick with a stuccoed front, stone rubble, and has a slate roof with a brick stack.
The house is a double-depth block that fits within the width of the 13th-century range. It has three storeys and a cellar, featuring two bays topped with a stone-coped parapet. On the ground floor, there is an entrance doorway to the right, which previously had a metal canopy above it, and to the left, a large sash window with glazing bars (3x4 panes). The first floor has two tall sash windows with glazing bars (3x4 panes) that are protected by bowed wrought-iron window guards. The second floor features two short sash windows with glazing bars (3x3 panes) set in openings with projecting sills. Inside, the cellar reveals remains of the 13th-century rubble walls. This house is a mirror-image pair with No. 13 Ladybellegate Street.
