Description
No. 17 Ladybellegate Street is a house that is part of an early 19th-century terrace, which incorporates parts of the 13th-century west range of the former Dominican friary known as Blackfriars. The house was altered around 1540 for Sir Thomas Bell and underwent later 19th-century alterations, with remodelling and restoration completed in the late 20th century by English Heritage. The building is constructed of brick with a stuccoed front, stone rubble, and has a slate roof with a brick stack.
The house is three storeys high with an attic and features a single bay topped with a stone coped parapet. On the ground floor, there is an entrance doorway to the right and a single sash window with vertical glazing bars (three panes) to the left. The upper floors each have a central sash window with similar glazing, set in openings with segmental arched heads and projecting stone sills. The rear wall is made of 13th-century rubble, visible to about half its height in the cellar.
