Description
Cooper's Marmalade Factory is a former marmalade factory that has been converted into offices. It was built between 1902 and 1903 by Herbert Quinton, with an extension added in 1925. The building is constructed of red brick with Bath stone dressings, and its roof is concealed behind parapets.
The main block is four storeys high and features a symmetrical three-bay north front. The ground floor windows are supported by small Tuscan columns and an entablature, with rusticated pilasters flanking a centrally located elliptically arched carriageway. This carriageway has spandrels carved with arabesques and is adorned with ornate wrought-iron gates featuring arabesque and scroll decorations. The first and second floors are connected by segmentally arched recesses that house the windows, with the second-floor windows being of Diocletian type. The centre window is bowed and has a frieze of carved stone festoons. The third storey is treated as an attic, featuring rusticated pilasters and bulbous Tuscan columns between the windows, topped with a shaped parapet and ball finials. The 1925 two-storey extension on the left has similar architectural details and continues around the back, where the main elevation is simpler with segmental-headed windows. At the rear, there are single-storey ranges connected to the main building by a glazed canopy, along with a tall brick chimney stack.
The interior has been converted for office use. Originally, Frank Cooper's marmalade was a by-product of the family grocery business in High Street, Oxford, but as demand grew, this factory was established in 1902 to meet that demand.
