Description
Merton College's South Range Hall, located in the Front Quadrangle, dates back to 1485. The hall is situated in the center, with the Fitzjames gateway to the east. It retains a portion of the original 13th-century wall at the west end, and the archway at the west end, which leads to the sacristy, was constructed between 1508 and 1521. The hall underwent significant rebuilding by James Wyatt from 1790 to 1794 and was restored or rebuilt by Sir Gilbert Scott between 1872 and 1874. The original door, featuring fine ironwork, is still in place.
