Description
New College, established in 1485, features the North Range Hall, Kitchen, and Chapel located in the Great Quadrangle. The eastern side begins with an undercroft, which was reconstructed in 1722 by William Townesend and contains notable early 16th-century panelling and a screen. The roof, designed by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1865, is based on the original structure.
The Kitchen, situated to the east of the Hall, was built around 1386 and includes a Buttery and Pantry at the west end, along with a staircase turret at the northwest corner that has a cellar below. The roof timbers in this area are likely original.
To the west lies the Chapel, which includes an ante-chapel and dates from the late 14th century. It was restored by James Wyatt between 1789 and 1794 and again by Sir Gilbert Scott from 1877 to 1881. The sacristy and music room to the north are likely from the 15th century but were restored in 1860. The southern exterior has been partly refaced in 1902 and has since been patched with synthetic stone.
The Chapel contains notable contemporary stained glass, which was reset in 1948, alongside some 18th-century glass, as well as significant brasses and misericords. The College war memorial, located on the south wall of the Ante-Chapel, was designed by Charles Holden in 1920 and features lettering by Eric Gill.
