Description
New College's North Range, built in 1485, is located in the Garden Quadrangle. The Chequer on the northwest side was added to the east side of the Bursary in 1449 and received an upper floor around 1480. In 1675, this upper floor was fitted as a Senior Common Room, which features contemporary panelling by Francis Butler and a fireplace by "Mr Byrde." An addition was made to the north of this room in 1912. The block to the east of the Chequer was constructed between 1682 and 1683 by mason William Byrd and was refaced between 1928 and 1931. The recessed block at the east end was built in 1707, with mason William Townesend and carpenter George Smith working to ensure it matched the southeast block.
