Description
13 and 14 Pembroke Street is a house built in 1641 by Richard Hannes. It has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries and was restored in 1948. The building has four storeys, including cellars, with the ground and first floors made of stone and the upper floors featuring timber-framing. The north elevation showcases two-storeyed, three-sided bays, with an overhang on the second and third floors that includes modern sash windows, a moulded wood cornice, and a small parapet. The ground floor bays have sash windows, while the first floor features three-light mullioned frames with returns. Between the bays is a pedimented doorway with a pulvinated frieze, topped by an oval moulded stone lunette. Number 14 has an early 19th-century reeded doorframe.
The south elevation includes a staircase projection flanked by gables on each side, with an overhang at the second floor resting on arches and an ornamental fascia. The gables have moulded bargeboards, and on the west side of the projection is an original two-light stone ovolo-moulded window frame with a dentilled cornice above. Each side of the projection features two-storeyed, three-sided bays with moulded cornices and pendants above; some retain their mullions while others have been replaced with sashes. On the east side of the projection is an original doorway with a later pedimented entablature, and nearby is an 18th-century lead rainwater cistern.
Inside, the building includes a 17th-century staircase, fireplaces, a well-preserved internal porch leading to a second-floor room, and some 18th-century panelling. Numbers 11 to 28 Pembroke Street form a group with this building.
