Description
38 Pembroke Street is a house that dates back to the 17th century. It is three stories tall and features a combination of stuccoed rubble and timber framing, with cellars and an overhang at the first and second floors. The roof is covered with red tiles and has two gables. The ground floor includes a modern double sash window and a plain doorway. On the first floor, there are two 18th-century sash windows set in moulded wood frames, while the second floor has two modern three-light casement windows. The rear of the house retains its original rubble construction and has a stone slate roof, with two gables at eaves level—one for the staircase and the other for an attic room. Between these gables and below the eaves is an original single-light moulded stone-framed window.
Inside, the house features some 17th-century panelling, which is considered unique in Oxford. This panelling has mitred mouldings at the joints of the styles and rails, with sunk panels and raised, moulded lesser panels. The top surface of each rail is simply splayed, reflecting an earlier design practice. This is the only known example of this specific type of transitional panelling in an old house in the city, with a similar style found in No 28 Holywell being somewhat later in date. The interior also includes a winding oak staircase.
Historically, this house and No 39 likely form part of a property that was "lately built" in 1690. The group of houses from Nos 36 to 39 is noted for its collective historical significance.
