CHURCH STREET (East side) Nos.1-6 (consec) Morton Almshouses (Formerly listed as Morton Almshouses)

Almshouses. Built 1671, for Sir William Morton; extended and restored 1953. Coursed limestone rubble; gabled stone slate roof; ridge stacks of rendered stone finished in brick. 5-unit plan. One storey and attic; 5-window range. Hood mould over C20 door set in chamfered stone architrave to left and similar doorway with restored jambs to right. Hood moulds over 3-light chamfered stone-mullioned windows with leaded lights, to ground floor and in gabled dormers; similar 2-light windows over doors. Over each window are inscribed names. Windows in right bay are C20; similar C17 mullioned windows and 1953 extension to rear. Left gable wall has heraldic cartouche over inscription with draped surround. Interior not inspected but likely to be of interest. Sir William Morton, of Hampden Manor (q.v.), built the almshouses in memory of his wife Anne. (Buildings of England: Oxfordshire: p672; R.C.
