Description

Nos. 1-6 Morton Almshouses are a group of almshouses built in 1671 for Sir William Morton, located on the east side of Church Street in Kidlington. The buildings are constructed from coursed limestone rubble and feature a gabled stone slate roof with ridge stacks made of rendered stone finished in brick. The almshouses have a five-unit plan, are one storey high with an attic, and present a five-window range.

The entrance includes a 20th-century door set within a chamfered stone architrave to the left, alongside a similar doorway with restored jambs to the right. Above these entrances are hood moulds, and the ground floor is adorned with three-light chamfered stone-mullioned windows featuring leaded lights, as well as gabled dormers. There are also similar two-light windows positioned above the doors. Each window has inscribed names above it. The windows in the right bay are from the 20th century, while the left gable wall displays a heraldic cartouche with an inscription and a draped surround.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. Sir William Morton built these almshouses in memory of his wife, Anne. The buildings were extended and restored in 1953.
