Description

Proffitt's House is a mid-17th century dwelling that combines a house and cottage into one. It is constructed from squared, coursed ironstone and features a steeply pitched thatched roof. The right gable is stone-coped and lacks a kneeler, with a base for a ball finial. The building has an altered stone end stack with a chamfered case and similar ridge stacks, one of which has a renewed blue brick shaft.

The layout consists of a 3-unit plan and a single-unit plan, with the entire structure being single storey plus attic and featuring a 4-window attic range. A common entrance passage, shared by the two dwellings, includes a 6-panelled door with a moulded wood surround and wood lintel. To the left of the entrance, there are two 4-light and one 7-light stone mullioned windows, while to the right, there is a 4-light stone mullioned window, all with hood moulds and label stops.

The attic features an eyebrow dormer with a 3-light metal casement in stone surrounds and wood lintel, along with two half-dormers that have 2- and 3-light metal casements with stone surrounds and wood lintels. On the right side of the attic floor, there is a 3-light stone mullioned window.

Historian Wood-Jones notes that the design of the two buildings sharing a common entrance passage to a common yard suggests a familial connection, indicating that separate dwellings were built for members of the same family on the original family plot. Proffitt's House contains two separate fireplaces that back onto the common entrance passage. The interior has not been inspected.
