Description
The King's Arms Public House, likely dating from the 17th century and incorporating medieval elements, is located in Gosford. It is constructed from random and coursed limestone rubble with wooden lintels, topped by a Stonesfield-slate roof featuring brick and ashlar stacks. The building consists of a 5-unit range formed by two sections and stands two storeys high. The irregular front has seven windows, with the two left bays being slightly lower. These bays contain casement windows and a doorway near the junction. The higher section has another doorway and features 12-pane sash windows from the 18th and 19th centuries on the first floor, while the ground floor windows are mostly casements, including one with four lights. A rubble mounting block with four steps is built against the front wall. Both sections show signs of early alterations. The roof is half-hipped on the right side and has stacks at the junction of the ranges and on the left gable. The rear of the building is largely obscured by a 20th-century extension but retains a rounded projection that was formerly a staircase. Inside, the lower bays contain heavy chamfered intersecting beams that may be medieval and are possibly remnants of a hospital that was once on the site, which was formerly known as Louse Hall. The 20th-century extensions at the rear are not of special architectural interest.
