Description
The gatepiers, gates, and attached walled garden located to the east of the Church of St. Mary were built around 1690, with the walls likely dating from the same period or the early 18th century. The structures are made of limestone ashlar, coursed squared rubble, and brick. The ashlar gatepiers feature moulded bases and caps, hanging strips with scrolled tops, and vase finials that are intricately carved with gadrooning and acanthus designs. The gates are from the 20th century.
The walled garden is roughly square in shape and has rubble walls that stand 2 to 3 meters high, topped with flat copings. On the western side, which borders the churchyard, the coping is triangular with an apex roll. There are blocked doorways on the south and east sides that have brick segmental arches, and the upper half of the inner face of the walls is lined with brick. The walls completely encircle the garden, except for about 10 meters of the south wall next to the gates, which have been lowered.
