Description
The Old House is a former school and schoolhouse, dating from 1710 and built for Dr. Robert South. It was likely partly rebuilt in the late 18th or early 19th century. The building is constructed of random and coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring Stonesfield-slate and artificial stone-slate roofs, and has rubble and brick stacks. It has a T-shaped plan, two storeys plus an attic, and a single storey plus an attic.
The symmetrical three-window front of the schoolhouse has three tall, renewed two-light casement windows at each floor, each with flat arches featuring projecting keyblocks. The roof has two large gabled 19th-century dormers. Gable walls incorporate stacks, with a very large stone-slated offset chimney projection to the left. A lower rear wing returns to the right at the far end and originally contained school rooms, likely dating from the 18th century. It features large segmental-arched windows, and a reset plaque with a moulded border commemorates the school's foundation in 1710. A small, single-storey annexe attached to the rear right angle of the house has a large projecting stone stack and was probably used as a kitchen. The interior has not been inspected.
