Description

Broughton Castle features a gatehouse, bridge, and curtain wall, dating from the 14th century, with the gatehouse remodeled in the 15th century and repairs recorded in 1655. The bridge also dates to the 14th century, while the walls were constructed around 1405. The gatehouse is built from regularly coursed ironstone rubble and has a crenellated parapet, with a small octagonal turret on the rear left. It stands two storeys high and has a 4-centred archway with plank doors dated 1617. Above the archway are two-light Perpendicular windows, with slits located at the right and left ends. The bridge is made of regularly coursed ironstone rubble, featuring ashlar on the upper level, and has two keystoned arches with moulded stone coping. The curtain wall to the right is crenellated and has cut stone sills.
