Description

Bailey Gate, dating from the 13th century, is constructed of rubble flint with stone dressings. The gate is rectangular in plan and features both inner and outer arches, with two round towers to the north. The north arch is formed of unmoulded stone blocks; its jambs blend into the surrounding wall and it includes an interior rere-arch. On the south side, two unmoulded stone block arches are supported by quoined piers, incorporating an interior rere-arch. Grooves indicate the former presence of a portcullis, and although hinges remain, the original doors have been lost. This gate served as the north entrance to the 13th century western extension of the fortifications of Castle Acre Castle. It is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, County Number 140.
