Description
Preedy’s Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1700, with additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It has an L-shaped layout. The front facing the garden is built of squared, coursed ironstone with well-defined joints and quoins. Later 19th and 20th-century extensions are constructed of red brick on the northwest and south sides. The roof is steeply pitched, covered in Welsh slate, and takes on an "M" shape on the southwest side. Brick end stacks are present, with a stone base to the one on the right of the garden front; a rebuilt 19th-century stack serves the 19th-century extension. The central entrance is framed by a 19th-century door with glazed and plank panels, above which is a three-pane overlight. This entrance is flanked by tall, original rectangular openings now containing 20th-century UPVC sash windows. Three similar windows are on the first floor. All windows are topped with stone keystone flat arches. Three small rooflights are also visible.
The southwest gable has a roof in the shape of the letter “M” and extends over a stair turret between the two main parts of the house. The northwest elevation shows the main two-unit section, an attached wing and a 19th-century brick extension. A gable end within the wing has a two-light wooden casement window with a stone lintel. The yard-facing (northwest) side of the wing has a tall rectangular window opening with a 20th-century UPVC window and a keyblock stone flat arch. A similar window, serving the stairwell, is positioned between the ground and first floors. A small attic dormer has a hipped slate roof and a two-light wooden casement window with two horizontal glazing bars.
Inside, the farmhouse is arranged as a three-part plan with a hall, a parlour, and a kitchen wing. A room to the north of the entrance passage features a boxed beam, a 20th-century fireplace, panelled pine cupboards, a dado rail, oak floorboards, a moulded pine window reveal and a wide four-panelled door. A room to the south of the entrance passage contains a stop-chamfered beam, a 20th-century fireplace, a pine cupboard and a quarry tile floor, although a door giving access from the hall is missing. A four-panelled door (now partly glazed) leads to a pantry, accessible through a plank door in the link section between the main part and the wing. The wing contains a passage with four-panelled doors leading to a winder staircase and a cellar. There is a blocked door opening to the north part of the wing. The kitchen has a wide inglenook fireplace with a stop-chamfered bressumer, a stop-chamfered beam, a quarry tile floor and a four-panelled pine door. A flimsy partition separates the kitchen from the hall. A further kitchen, located on the northwest side and reached from the hall, has a passageway with stone flags and a dog-leg staircase leading to the first floor. This later kitchen incorporates 20th-century details. A wooden winder staircase with stud walls leads to the first floor, which contains two bedrooms and a small box room above the hall and parlour. These rooms feature chamfered beams, four-panelled pine doors, a hob fire in the north bedroom, oak floorboards and pine cupboards. A bedroom in the wing, above the kitchen, has a deep cupboard and a plank door with strap hinges and a solid oak frame. A 19th-century dog-leg staircase allows access to the landing. The attic has two main bedrooms with principal rafters and purlins, and two smaller rooms in the wing. Moulded oak doorframes have renewed 19th-century doors, and the floors are of pine.
