Description
The South Pavilion and attached walls, located approximately 40 meters east of the Manorhouse, date from the early 17th century. This pavilion, which also served as a guesthouse, is constructed from coursed squared limestone with ashlar dressings and features a Stonesfield-slate roof with a rebuilt stone gable stack. It is a single range building with two storeys and an attic.
The gable end facing the courtyard has a chamfered depressed-arched stone doorway with an old plank door, alongside a square-headed doorway that has a hollow-chamfered surround and a label. Above these doorways are two small stair windows, and in the gable, there is a 4-light mullioned window positioned below a sundial. The side of the pavilion facing away from the Manorhouse has two 3-light windows on the first floor and two 2-light windows on the ground floor. The side facing the house features three 3-light windows on the first floor, with inserted windows below in a similar style. The outer gable wall includes a chimney projection with moulded offsets. All windows are adorned with hollow-chamfered mullions, labels, and leaded glazing. The gable parapets are decorated with projecting moulded kneelers and obelisk finials. The interior has not been inspected.
The wall extending towards the house is approximately 2 meters high and has a tapering rubble coping. The return at the south end of the house is a remnant of the front wall of a demolished section that included the base of a canted bay window. Another wall extends to a gatepier and is about 1.5 meters high, although it has lost its coping. A wall extending southwards for approximately 50 meters, which is part of the walled kitchen garden, stands about 2.5 meters high and features a tiled coping. This pavilion is part of a fine group of buildings.
